I always love it when a customer picks an interesting stone for their countertops. Last week we had the pleasure of installing Blanc du Blanc, a sharp and beautiful pegmatite granite from Brazil. The particular slab of Blanc du Blanc that we installed for this job looked like one of Jackson Pollock’s more impassioned works, with streaks of black schorl tourmaline nestled starkly between tufts of cream colored feldspar and a mosaic of cloudy gray quartz. Pressed together over millions of years under the weight of the earth’s tectonic shifts, the spaces between the different minerals are filled with streaks of muted gold that blend in just well enough to give the whole slab a regal glow. When they brought this slab into our shop, it felt like a long lost masterpiece had been unearthed, which, if you think about it, is really what it was. After the customer’s countertop pieces were fabricated, I went into the back of the shop multiple times just to look at the granite in admiration. I was almost sad to see it go. The only solace I had was seeing the finished kitchen after the installation.
